Michael Oher Report

Much is being made of this offensive tackle draft class, as they have the potential to go in both directions. Players like Michael Oher are classic boom or bust prospects, meaning they can be faced with instant stardom or be the next Robert Gallery. Oher is one of many players with potential at the tackle position, but his intelligence and other weaknesses to make teams too scared to draft him.
Michael Oher Michael Oher was heavily recruited coming out of high school, and even had a book written about the struggles in his life (The Blind Side). He started at Offensive Guard his freshman year at Mississippi (2005), earning 1st Team Freshman All-America Honors from Rivals.com. In his sophomore year he started all 12 games at LT, earning 2nd team All-SEC honors from the coaches. Oher stepped up his play during his junior year, earning consensus 1st team All-SEC honors. As a senior he was a 1st team All-American and started every game at LT for the 3rd straight year.

Strengths:
He's a big guy that bends at the knees well and can absolutely dominate at times. Although you may hear differently, I believe he had a very impressive Senior Bowl week and played with aggressiveness that is not always seen from him. Oher is a very solid athlete for his size. He can slide well and moves with fluidity at the second level. Durability is a plus, and he has never missed significant amounts of time due to injuries.

Weaknesses:
I think the combine really hurt him. Compared to other players, most of his tests were below or around the average for offensive tackles, something that was not expected from him. His arms also measured shorter than the other top tackles, which could be in problem in the pros against speed rushers. Some have questioned his intelligence and learning curve, and he can be a little inconsistent during games. He did not play up to his talent consistently during his senior season.

In my eyes he was a lock for the top 10 before the combine, but now it's looking doubtful. One thing going for him is the amount of teams in the top half of the 1st looking for a quality young LT. He might need to take some time at OG and develop into a starter at Left Tackle someday. The Bengals or Raiders might be too high for a boom or bust type prospect like him but I don't think he'll get past the Eagles at #21.
