Jason Smith Report

The days of just looking for that hard-nosed, tough lineman to play left tackle are long gone. Now, receiver foot speed, Antonio Gates athleticism, and 6-5, 300 size will get you a shot to play the coveted left tackle position. Jason Smith has the most athletic ability in this draft, as he was a former tight end turned Big 12 tackle stud.
Jason Smith

In his senior season, where he went from raw tackle prospect to elite blind-side stud, Smith allowed only three quarterback pressures and 4.5 sacks in 1,147 plays at left tackle. He made it significantly easier for Robert Griffin to learn the offense and somewhat roam because of the protection on his backside. Smith was the main reason for the offensive success the emerging Baylor bears had this past season.
Strengths:
Smith's overall athletic ability is what pro scouts are drooling about. His foot-speed is as good as most athletic tight ends, meaning he can contain the speed rushers off the edge with little difficulty. Whether it's a speed rusher or a blitzing linebacker, Smith has the quickness to get out and get a hand on him. He also has the great strength that most teams want in a tackle. He works hard in the weight room and in is starting to translate to great run blocking.
Weaknesses:
Smith has great strength, but it's the tenacity and desire he lacks that should be a concern in the run game. Smith doesn't always get good drive when from the regular position, and is significantly better blocking on the move. His technique, though rapidly improving, still needs work, especially using his arms correctly and maintaining balance against power rushers. Also, he is a bit raw and isn't a finished product, and will need coaching.
Smith has the talent to be an dominating pass blocker that will contain players like DeMarcus Ware, Shawn Merriman and Osi Umenyiora from getting around him, something a majority of left tackles can't do in the league now. That potential, coupled with his rapid improvement over the past two years signifies where he's headed as a player. He does, however, have some bust potential which is why he's below the much safer Eugene Monroe, but has one of the best chances of any player in this draft and be an All-Pro and is a sure-fire Top 6 pick.
