In the fifth of Eight installments, I'll look into the many position battles that are fought every off-season. Nothing in the NFL is guaranteed, from the contracts to a roster spot, which is why the NFL is so intriguing every year. For every Pierre Thomas and Miles Austin, long-shots for an NFL roster, there's a Deuce McCallister or Marvin Harrison, former greats, that gets cut. So, on that note, we'll take a look at the NFC East, where the depth at receiver will have to turn into some star power if these teams want to exceed their own playoff aspirations.

In our first of EIGHT installments, we take a look at the position battles of the AFC East. From the future of a young "franchise" quarterback, to fighting for a roster spot at cornerback, the AFC East should have a very intriguing set of battles that will be hard to predict and entertaining to see unfold.

It's a very rare occasion that not only one franchise quarterbacks but TWO have been traded...so far. And, the astonishing part of that is that we may not be done. As many as 7 other "star" players could be dealt by draft day, with many potential suitors. Usually the off-season consists of dead-end trade rumors and false hopes, but if the March-April off-season trend can continue, I have no doubt that many of the players on the trade block could be moved.

The 2009 NFL football season is finally underway. Today marked the beginning of the majority of teams Off-Season workout practices. Most players will return back from their homes and vacations to begin the crucial physical training preparation needed to compete on game days. Some players have new homes and new teammates to meet thanks to Free Agency. While a small handful of players still have not shown up at all (ex: Jay Cutler; Broncos).

A look back at some of the biggest things we learned this week in the NFL
1. “Out of 32 teams in the NFL, it only takes 1 to say YES” At one point this past week, there was a small chance that recently released WR Terrell Owens would not be able to find a suitor for the 2009 football season. Agent Drew Rosenhaus stressed that multiple teams were interested, thus thrusting the media into a frenzy of trying to figure out which teams, owners, coaches, and fans would welcome the controversial wide receiver into their franchise. Little did we know that the Buffalo Bills (otherwise known as “North Americas Team” by T.O.) would in fact be the place that #81 would now call home. Expect new drama to engulf the AFC East division this year as Trent Edwards, Randy Moss, and the Wildcat offense are new cast members in Terrell Owens’s own personal reality TV series we call the NFL. Make sure to get your popcorn ready…

The NFL is a “what have you done for me lately” league when it comes to the status of a franchise’s Head Coaching position. Teams want to win now and when that doesn’t occur, the fall guy usually tends to be the man calling the shots on the sideline each Sunday. Gone this year are four Super Bowl winning coaches: Mike Holmgren (Seahawks), Tony Dungy (Colts), Jon Gruden (Buccaneers) and Mike Shanahan (Broncos). In 2009, there will be 9 new NFL head coaches, plus 2 promoted interim coaches, for a total of 11 new hires taking the reins. That is over 1/3 of the entire 32 team league, setting an NFL record.
To put this in perspective, Jeff Fisher (Titans) has been with his team since the 1994 season, longer than any other current head coach. Only 3 coaches have led their team to a Super Bowl victory: Bill Belichick (Patriots), Tom Coughlin (Giants) and Mike Tomlin (Steelers). Five head coaches have won the AP Coach of the Year Award: Bill Belichick (Patriots), Sean Payton (Saints), Andy Reid (Eagles), Lovie Smith (Bears) and Mike Smith (Falcons).
2008 new head coaches John Harbaugh (Ravens) and Mike Smith (Falcons) have raised the bar for the 11 new coaches after directing their teams to 11-5 records and making the playoffs last year.

"Exposure" "The Player" "Locker Room Cancer"
All names tied to the most outgoing and extroverted receiver this league has ever seen....and that's not a complement. Let's have a quick recap of Terrell Owen's locker room history before I talk about (dare I say) how he could positively impact the Bills.
