Top FCS Teams to Watch 1. Appalachian State The team that upset Michigan two seasons ago is now starting to gain respect as a team that isn’t just a one game wonder, but a powerhouse at the lower level. They have been extremely successful the past 5-10 years, and are known throughout the FCS as a consistent threat. Armani Edwards, once thought of as a deep sleeper for the Heisman last year, is on track to be the first two-time Walter Payton award winner (the Heisman of FCS) and could lead his team back the FCS finals once again.
2. Montana Another perennial power almost every year, Montana has developed into a notable FCS program. With a few NFL talent type players the last few years, most match-ups they play, before the playoffs, they usual are favorite in. Other than the emerging Weber State, Montana has little competition in the Big Sky, and should be on their way to another top seed in the tournament at seasons’ end.
3. James Madison It’s a good-bad scenario for James Madison. It’s good because they have great competition to show how impressive they are. It’s bad because they have such good competition that while to me they are the 3rd best in the nation, while to others their barely 3rd in their conference. Villanova and Richmond both impressed last year and are a little more stable, but based on JMU’s past success and solid athletes across the board, they get the edge as national title contenders.
4. Villanova Speaking of a tough CAA conference, Villanova is another staunch competitor that should be fighting for a national title. With one of the better quarterback depth’s in the FCS ranks (Chris Whitney is the favorite, with Antwon Young another solid starter), they should have the consistent offense that is needed to compete. They should battle with last year’s national title winner (Richmond), fellow Top 5 team James Madison, and UMass and New Hampshire from the Northern Division for the best team in the CAA, as well as the country.
5. Jacksonville State While Jack Crowe and the Jacksonville State team is well-rounded and has talent at most positions, their entire season rests on the shoulders of one man: former top national recruit, LSU stud, quarterback Ryan Perriloux. Perriloux is steadily improving from reports, and should be poised for a huge season that will showcase his ability as well as his maturity. Even with him they may not be national title favorites, but they sure will have the NFL scouts at most games, seeing if he has grown-up enough to play at the next level.
